Synchronome - Masters of Electrical Timekeeping

by Robert H. A. Miles.

This book is the culmination of fifteen years of research and writing, and charts the lives of all the key characters of the Synchronome story and covers the early history of the firm from the 1890s through to the firm’s eventual demise in the 1980s. It is illustrated throughout with pictures of the key figures and places.

It charts the development of the Synchronome master clock through all its forms.

It explores the development of precision clocks by William Hamilton Shortt, and gives an account of Synchronome’s involvement in the transmission of time by wireless, its adoption of the synchronous clock, and the development of marine clocks.

Of value to collectors and conservators, it gathers together crucial information on the repair, set-up and maintenance of Synchronome clocks and dials with clearly labelled colour pictures and diagrams.

Appendices provide dating charts and the correlation between serial numbers and dates.

Antiquarian Horology Volume One

Reprinted electronically on CD-ROM

Deacon book cover

The first Volume of the Journal was published in twelve issues over the years 1953-1956 and held some two hundred pages. It offered sixty short articles and notes, as well as many illustrations, of course all black and white. Full details can be found in the list of Articles published in Antiquarian Horology Volumes 1 to 29 December 1953 - June 2006 and the Indexes, which can all be accessed here on the website.

It had become increasingly difficult to obtain Volume 1, in spite of a reprint in 1977. Unfortunately the cost of reprinting it today would be prohibitive and it has been decided to make the information available in a less costly format, as a CD-ROM. With the kind permission of the BHI the CD-ROM also includes the nine monthly antiquarian supplements to the BHI’s Horological Journal January-September 1952, known as ‘The Clock & Watch Collector’, and the 1953 Bulletin (illustrated). The CD ROM is supplied in a box with a green cover sleeve. The information is at high resolution but unfortunately not searchable.
